I have painted many pictures to represent the progression of meditative states of mind and added poems, combining poetry and art to express from both head and heart, the interplay of virtue, peace and truth.

The cool lake shade

"The sun shines into the ground, as the highest peace is found, and life springs eternal life..."

The crimson maple

"If the crimson of blood, is seen like the autumn maple. Like the passing of a season..."

A holy trinity

“The Wise Lord and his child. Meek and mild. The angel of goodness. Lightness and brightness. Coming together more and more. Opening the inner door...”

Recapturing innocence

“Known there in the breath are both life and death together. Hence the deathless may arise to cut the tether...”

Refuge

“One day a little boy went to see the Buddha, and the Buddha was so kind he let the little boy straight into his mind...”

Open sky

"The open sky opens into space, there is His infinite grace. A new heaven for the body to find, a new heaven eternally kind..."

All things merge in the deathless

"When proper homage is is made, there can be love in the purple shade. The shade is not shadow but rest..."

Lighter and lighter

"Seeing and seen, one not two. Seeing right through. Feeling lighter and lighter, being lighter and lighter too..."

His Kingdom

HIS KINGDOM is a picture fairy tale in which all the events are in the mind of a meditator. The story brings together our best qualities, those of virtue, wisdom and samadhi as inner characters.

• If you want to see an introductory explanation click here.
• You can enjoy the story in simple words and pictures on this page.
• Watch a video with poetic subtitles where you are now.

Or enjoy all of these in this order to see if you can bring these characters alive in your own mind.

Please note that the different versions have slightly different content and endings.

Healing attention
- The Foundations of Mindfulness

Can you keep your focus on the centre and still recognize the figures? Then in meditation you can be aware of the breath, make the mind peaceful and also be aware of and learn from what is arising and ceasing in the mind.

Balanced attention
-
The Star is Landing

Can you keep your focus on the centre with a patient, relaxed gaze and still be aware of the shifting stars and colours? Then in meditation you can be aware of the breath, make the mind peaceful and also be aware of what is arising and ceasing in the mind.

Liberating attention
- V
itakka Vicara

If you can keep your attention calm and steady and see clearly what is arising and ceasing then the mind will let go and enter into light and space, more and more.
